I have been blessed with many friends throughout my life but I have only a few best friends. Friends that have been there for me through thick and thin. We have walked the dusty road of life together united in our purpose. We have met at the crossroads of happiness, joy, accomplishment, disappointment, defeat, failure and sorrow. Today we walk together in sorrow.
I gaze upon the beautiful mountains that surround me. The wind stings my cheeks as I ponder the timelessness of their beauty, the majesty of their presence and the strength of their ability to endure. I reflect upon the spirit of my best friend's son, John and I see the same strength, timelessness and majesty. John was and always will be a gigantic presence. When John walked into a room he owned it, held it captive but not in an arrogant way. He dominated the room of life because he loved it and everyone in it. My girlfriends and I understand this because we have also lived our lives in a huge way, bold, dynamic, winner takes all mentality. Life is never long enough, time should never be wasted, our mantra in life is to live large. This is the true beauty of our friendship. John shared this same vitality and we loved him for it. If you could judge a man's wealth by his friendships John would be one of the wealthiest men in America. He honored his friendships by taking the time to nurture them. This one quality is why he stands apart from the many. John lived his life in an all encompassing way, each day mattered, he loved his family, his friends and his life, he didn't waste one minute of his short time on earth. His footprint is mammoth.
I can't change the course that our lives have taken, I can't take away the pain, but I can honor the man. I can live my life as close to his principles as I can. I can love my friends, love my family, appreciate the important things in life, hold people accountable and I can smile, laugh and rejoice. I can try and continue in John's large footprint, keeping it alive and well, my own personal, eternal flame. Cheers to you John and your incredible life, it has been an honor to have been a part of it!
